The Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CULS) is a leading educational and research centre focused on forestry, the environment, agriculture, natural resource sustainability, management and computer science, technology and regional development. The CULS leads students towards responsibility and respect for the environment in order to enable a sustainable life for future generations. In 2020, it was once again named the most sustainable university in the Czech Republic. The university is situated on a unique green modern campus in Suchdol.

Client’s requirements

Česká zemědělská univerzita v Praze si kladla za cíl vytvoření datového skladu a systému reportingu za účelem sledování dat studijní agendy, ekonomické a personální agendy a vědy a výzkumu. Původně byla data dostupná pouze v primárních systémech a jakákoliv analýza byla závislá na manuálních exportech z těchto systémů převážně do excelových souborů. Nebyla zde možnost propojovat data napříč systémy a tento stav také vedl k zvýšenému riziku chybovosti, nekonzistence a náročnosti práce s daty.

Hlavním požadavkem bylo sjednocení dat na jednom místě a jejich automatické zpracování pro následnou vizualizaci a reporting včetně tvorby podkladu pro výkaznictví nadřízené organizaci.

Solution

To meet the client’s requirements, an analysis of the source systems was carried out. Based on the results of the analysis, we created a data warehouse that processes data for reporting and accounting:

  • analysis and definition of all users’ needs + mapping of university processes;
  • architecture design and creation of a DWH model;
  • integration of data from source systems;
  • transformation and calculation of data in the DWH;
  • connection of the prepared data source to the MS Power BI reporting platform;
  • preparation of the default sets of reports, including specification for reporting to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports;
  • sharing of reports with defined users, including setting of user rights;
  • training of users and subsequent handover of the developed solution to users, who will manage it themselves.

Benefits

A high-quality data warehouse and reporting made it possible to automate some processes and significantly reduced the error risk and data acquisition costs. University management obtained current and historical data in clear reports that can inform their strategic decisions.

Other benefits include freeing up staff capacity and enabling employees to further develop their use of modern technologies. Easy access to data will make it possible to create new analyses in the future, with the potential to expand the data warehouse with additional data sources.
