Client’s requirements

Komerční banka is undergoing a digital transformation. To make this a successful endeavor, the bank is engaging modern technology and analytical tools to collect, store, analyze and use data to manage its processes.

Complex analytical solutions are currently implemented through several tools (IBM Cognos, SAP BusinessObjects), which complicates data use and management. Given the bank’s need for self-service reporting, modern trends in business intelligence and other factors, a new reporting platform was chosen – namely Microsoft Power BI.

In order to successfully initiate migration to the new platform, Komerční banka requested assistance with setting up governance in the Power BI environment, development standards and templates; creating manuals; analyzing a sample of reports intended for migration; and validating the migration feasibility of complex solutions and specific functionalities.

Solution

Implementation of solutions to meet the client’s requirements were divided into the following projects:

1. Power BI governance consultancy and support

The project objective was to modify the existing Power BI governance and related processes to enable a shift towards much more massive use of the platform, with a focus on:

  • Modification of the tenant setup.
  • Systematization of the nomenclature of all objects.
  • Setting up of procedures for the use of AAD groups and AAD data for row-level security (RLS).
  • Enabling of automation of some processes.
  • Monitoring and management of the entire platform.
  • Use of external tools for Power BI.
  • Creation of templates for regular and paginated reports.

2. Migration of existing BusinessObjects reports

The project focused on the following areas:

  • Assistance with preparation, migration and testing of report mockups.
  • Creation and development of paginated reports with optimization for printing or PDF generation.
  • Development of an internal knowledge base – user training.
  • Preparation of a report creation manual.

3. PoC migration of existing Cognos reports to Power BI

The goal of the project was to analyze and clearly describe the migration of selected reports and their functionalities.

The implementation covered the following areas:

  • Analysis of current reports.
  • Analysis and selection of suitable tools for the conversion of individual functionalities.
  • Proposal of a solution and procedure for the conversion of the necessary functionalities of current Cognos reports to the Power BI environment.
  • Transfer of priority reports to the Power BI environment, including the conversion of the functionalities of the original reporting.
  • Verification of the possibility of replacing Analysis Studio with native Power BI functionality.
  • Proposal of a solution for complex row-level security rules beyond the scope of existing reports to simplify administration.
  • Documentation for the migration of individual functionalities.

Benefits

Power BI governance consultancy and support facilitated set-up of the Power BI environment and governance system in a manner ensuring long-term sustainability, security and monitoring, readiness for massive self-service use and compliance with recommendations and standards.

Migration of the BusinessObjects report suite included, in addition to migration itself, development of a manual for report creation and training of report users.

The migration of Cognos reports made it possible to demonstrate full-fledged replacement of functionalities on the Power BI platform and explain the differences and specific features of the new platform to enable effective design and implementation of subsequent migration of reports.

Throughout the PoC project, native Power BI functionalities were presented which will benefit users in a number of ways and make it easier to work with data. The new tool’s capabilities were taken into account during implementation to ensure that the tool’s potential is fully utilized and users are able to engage the broad spectrum of reliable functionalities offered by the platform. Another important benefit was the compilation of a list of related recommendations and prerequisites that should be addressed before migration.
